The Symphonic and Concert Bands serve as the heart of the Band program of Memorial High School.  An emphasis is placed on this part of the program, with individual progress on improving technique and musicianship being stressed.  The Symphonic Band studies advanced literature of all styles, with a high level of musical excellence and maturity being required.  The Concert Band places an emphasis on improving the students’ technical and musical skills in order to prepare them for membership in Symphonic Band.

At the conclusion of Marching season, all students audition for placement into either the Symphonic or Concert Bands.  Seniors are generally placed into the Symphonic Band but are required to audition for chair placement.  Auditions will consist of three parts: a required selection, scales or rudiments, and sight-reading. Specific details of the auditions will be announced well in advance of the audition dates, and one "help day" will be held with the directors prior to the audition. The results of the audition will count as a playing test for the second quarter.

Performances by these groups include the Winter Band Concert, Contest Concert, Spring Concerts, and participation in District and State OMEA Adjudicated Events.  Members are strongly encouraged to participate in the annual District III OMEA Solo and Ensemble Adjudicated Event, held at the St. Marys City Schools, as well as audition for membership in other honors bands and orchestras across the state of Ohio.
