Jazz! The MHS Jazz Bands I and II are open to all students who are currently enrolled in Symphonic or Concert Bands. Jazz I is primarily for older members, while many Jazz II students play a “secondary” instrument. During the 2007-2008 school year, approximately 40% of MHS Band members performed in one or more jazz band.  They have performed at the Celina Jazz Festival, and Jazz I performed at the Dixie Stampede in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, as part of the Smoky Mountain Music Festival trip in 2005.  Both bands plan to perform at the 1st annual “Roughrider Jazz Festival” held at West Jefferson High School in suburban Columbus in the spring of 2009.

Each band rehearses at least one day after school each week after the conclusion of Marching Band season.  The Junior High Jazz Ensemble begin rehearsals at the start of second semester during a homeroom every other week.  All members of the Seventh and Eighth Grade bands are encouraged to perform in this ensemble. Those interested in switching to a “traditional” jazz instrument are invited to do so during this time. Promptness and regular attendance is required to participate.

Each jazz band performs at concerts and for school assemblies, including the annual “Jazz Concert” held the second Friday of May each year.  A professionally recorded CD of this concert is made available for purchase of this concert.
