In order to maintain the high
standards of excellence in our bands, it is important that all students and
parents acquaint themselves with the expectations of our program. Please remember
that attendance at all performances is required for membership in our
program. Performances for our band are
equivalent to a test or final exam in other classes-except it impossible to
“make up” a performance.
An absence from a
performance should indicate a valid emergency or unavoidable family situation –
such as illness or a death in the family.
These will only be considered “excused” with a note from a parent, prior
to the performance if at all possible. Other valid school-related conflicts
(for example, athletic or academic conflicts) will be accepted as excused
absences; but non-school events (for example, dance recitals, athletic teams
not affiliated with the school, etc.) are not considered excused absences in
most cases because they are not school related functions. Any “unexcused”
absence from Junior High Band performances will result in a two-letter grade
reduction at the end of the term. Any
absence other than that of an emergency nature should be discussed with the
director, and a written excuse provided at least two weeks prior to the event
when possible. Prompt communication is
appreciated!
Proper concert attire, which consists of dresses or skirts for the ladies; nice pants, dress
shirt and tie, and nice shoes for the gentlemen, is expected from our Junior
High band members and will count as a
portion of the concert performance grade. At no
time is it ever acceptable to wear shorts, jeans, tennis shoes, or t-shirts to
a junior high band performance. Students are also expected to stay the
entire length of all concerts, unless prior permission has been granted from
the director.
We are making a
special effort this year to improve behavior at our concerts at all grade
levels, and have developed our Concert
Etiquette Guidelines for the St. Marys City Schools Performing Arts
Department (click here.) While we have discussed these expectations
with our students, we would also ask that you review these guidelines with your
child, so that all of our performers and audience members alike are aware of
the importance of proper concert behavior. Audience members should recognize that
performers are trying their best to present an enjoyable musical experience for
everyone. A performer's concentration can be interrupted by little things that
may seem trivial to audience members. By
following these guidelines you can set a proper example for our students, encourage
our performers to do their best, and
make our concerts more enjoyable for all who attend.
